Abstract
Background/objective: Recently, Oral cancer mortality and morbidity is very high in Sudan, particularly among men due to the habit of Smokeless tobacco use.The study aimed to investigatethe Histopathologicalpatterns of oral lesions and to determine whether the lesion aggressiveness is age specific. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted as a descriptive retrospective study on oral lesions biopsies in Khartoum - Sudan. The data were collected from examination of biopsies and patients records. All oral biopsies were examined and classified as laboratory based by well professional pathologist using Hematoxylin & Eosin standard method.Thestatistical analysis wasperformed by the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) for Windows computing program version 20. Results: Of the 115 subjects, there were 81 (70.4%) malignancy, benign lesion 18 (15.7%), inflammation 12 (10.4%) and 4 (3.5%) of cases as other conditions. Regarding The distribution of malignancy by age groups, among 46 individuals at age group < 40 years there were 27 cases constitute 58.7%. Of 42 individuals at age group 40 – < 60 years there were 29 malignant cases constitute 69% and 92.6% of population at 60 years or more with malignancy. Conclusions: It could be concluded that the majority of patients with oral lesions who underwent surgical intervention presented late and proved to have malignancy, and lesion aggressiveness is age specific. The study suggested the implementation of popular orientation of health education and oral screening program.
